One Word On...Books With a Twist

Sometimes it's great when a book turns itself on its head. Acrobatic, one could call it. Here is a trio of such flexible tomes.

The Lover's Dictionary by David Levithan...Inventive
  • A novel written as a dictionary. Another one word? Genius. And it's hilarious. And honest.
The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster. Illustrated by Jules Feiffer...Frantastical
  • Okay, so I made up a word here. But, as you know if you've read this, it's fitting. I can't believe I hadn't heard of this as a child, but I'm perfectly okay with reading it as an adult. In fact, every adult should read this. Summer reading, anyone?
Possession by A.S. Byatt...Transporting
  • Full disclosure: I saw the movie with Gwyneth Paltrow and Aaron Eckhart first. Films bring to life what you imagine when you read. But, the amazing thing about the book is that it's just as vivid as the movie. Think writing a book is hard? This is essentially a book within a book. And it works like a charm.

One Word On...

What may hopefully become a new, if intermittent, series: a single word on books I've read and loved through the years. Comments, discussions, suggestions are, as always, welcomed. --Rebecca

Mistaken by Neil Jordan...Engrossing
The Other Wes Moore by Wes Moore...Thought-provoking
You Know When the Men Are Gone by Siobhan Fallon...Moving
